Raf's Cuts
Acrylic on Stretched Canvas | 12 x 12”
Raf is the barber who worked next door to the coffee shop where I baked. Our ritual was that every day after my shift, as I got in my car and pulled away, he would wave at me, and I’d wave back. One day, I walked into his shop and asked him, “Do you cut girls’ hair?” As I sat in the chair, he told me about his love for his family, growing up in war, and his previous life making clothes. The way he tells stories is captivating and endearing, and as we chatted, he began to speak encouragement over me and my life. His words were so deeply kind and unexpected that I cried.
When I dropped off this painting at Raf’s, I told him that normally, to show appreciation, I bring people baking, but since he can’t eat sweets, I brought him art. Inside his shop, he showed me other pieces of art clients have made for him. It doesn’t surprise me that his stories and words move people and inspire creativity.
Getting my hair cut at a barbershop was not something I ever thought I’d do, but I’m so grateful that I did. He doesn’t know it, but that day Raf inspired me to launch my website.
